Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

A Different Kind of King

As we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, we experience a picture unlike our common understanding of royalty. Consider this job description: 1) Be shepherds who serve the sheep, find strength in weakness and power in vulnerability; 2) Admit and name our sins, powerlessness, and defects to find reconciliation with God, self, and each other; and 3) Be ambassadors of reconciliation to find peace in the difficulties that occur in life. Then, set free from slavery, we will serve Christ’s majesty and ceaselessly proclaim his praise. Today we consider how we are called to let Christ change our view of royalty and how to serve Christ the King.

  1. When have you experienced physical, mental, or emotional healing? Who was God’s instrument in setting you free?
  2. How did you show your gratitude? Looking back, would you do anything differently?
  1. The good thief reached out to Jesus. How is he a model for us? Is anyone reaching out to you in any way, at work, at home, in your parish, in the local community, in the world community? How will you heal these wounds and/or warm these hearts?
  2. How can you bring healing to your world by standing up for people who are being stereotyped—and thereby set everybody free?
