Thomas’ Funeral will take place on September 5, 2024 at 12:30 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church
Thomas Alvarez went to be with the Lord on August 25, 2024. He was born on August 15, 1927 in Gonzales, Texas to Nieves and Damiana Alvarez.
Thomas grew up in Gonzales and enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country. He then moved to San Antonio and met the love of his life, Maria Quinones. They married on January 5, 1952 and over the next 66 years built a beautiful life together. Thomas worked at Kelly Air Force Base for over 25 years and held numerous management positions. Some of his proudest moments include leading the Fuel Operations Department, notably overseeing the fueling of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Air Force One during Ronald Reagan’s presidency.
Thomas was a loving husband, dedicated father, devoted grandfather and great-grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He volunteered for his sons’ Boy Scout troops and helped coach their CYO teams. He also supported his daughter’s love of Girl Scouts. Thomas enjoyed family trips to the beach, barbecuing on the weekends, and cheering on the Spurs and Cowboys. But his greatest treasure was his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Tata”. He always made time to attend their events from t-ball and volleyball games to dance recitals and school events.
Thomas was a devout Catholic and was very active at his church. He was a founding member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, President of the Men’s Club, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of The Knights of Columbus.
Thomas was preceded in death by his wife Maria; son, Thom; brother, Julian; sisters, Josie Rodriquez and Ruth Daniels.
Thomas is survived by his daughter, Lydia; son, John (Norma); and daughter-in-law, Deborah; grandchildren, John Jr. (Ana), Sarah Balderas (Hugo), Alyssa Balderas (Andre), Stacie and Stephanie; and greatgrandchildren, Isabella, Elizabeth, Asher and Enzo Balderas, and David Balderas. He is also survived by his brother Lupe, sister Amely Vasquez, brother Jesse (Laura), sister-in-law Maria and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Sacred Mission Hospice for their care during this time.
